No. Many therapists don’t just treat severe distress- they also support clients through everyday challenges like career changes, parenting, stress, relationships and general wellbeing.
-
Choosing a therapist is similar to choosing any service provider: check their website, seek referrals, and look for experience with the issue you want to work on. If you’re unsure, call and ask- they can often point you in the right direction.
Your first session is a chance to get a feel for their style and see if the fit feels right. Feeling comfortable is essential to speaking openly and getting the most from therapy.
-
Each session is collaborative problem-solving: you share what’s happening, and the therapist helps you move toward the life you want. You can speak freely without criticism or judgment, and your conversations are strictly confidential.
Every therapist and client is different, but the core remains the same- a therapist listens without judgment and helps you work toward solutions.
-
The number of sessions varies. Some people need just one conversation to gain clarity, while others prefer support over weeks or months, or regular check-ins. Therapy can be a single session, short-term guidance through a transition, or ongoing support for overall wellbeing.
You choose what feels right for you.

It depends on your preference. Telehealth offers convenience- no travel, easy access from home or work, and the freedom to choose therapists beyond your local area.
-
No referral is needed for private sessions.
To access Medicare rebates, a doctor’s referral through a Mental Health Care Plan is required.
-
Fees vary by therapist.
My 2026 rate is $230 per 50-minute session.
With a Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare rebates up to 10 sessions per year at $96.65 each. I also see clients via TAC, WorkCover, and FAS. Private health insurers may offer extras cover rebates- check your policy.
From January 1, 2026, clients pay fees directly and claim any rebates themselves. Any gap between the rebate and fee is the client’s responsibility.
